The relationship between a client and a psychotherapist is protected by law. Information can not be disclosed without written permission.
Exceptions include suspected child abuse, suspected abuse of disabled adult or elder abuse. I am required by law to report these to the appropriate authorities immediately.
Should a client threaten to bodily harm another person, I am required by law to notify the police and inform the intended victim.
If a client intends to harm him/her self, I will make every effort to ask for their cooperation in forming a safety plan. If the individual chooses to not cooperate with these efforts, I will then take measures without their permission to ensure their safety.
